Nutrition and recovery

My approach to supplements

Nutrition, rest and physical activity are part of everyday self-care and recovery between training sessions.

Here you will find information to help you understand the role of nutrients and when it may be worth considering a food supplement, taking into account your needs, habits and the products you already use.

Supplements may help meet specific needs, but they do not replace a varied diet or medical treatment when it is needed.

Understanding is the first step towards better health

Before choosing a supplement

The starting point is understanding your needs: your usual diet, your activity, how you rest and what you want to achieve.

It is also important to review any medication and supplements you already take, to avoid overlapping ingredients and assess potential interactions.

An additional product is not always necessary. Sometimes, adjusting your diet, rest or training load is more useful. If you need a specialist nutritional or medical assessment, I will recommend that you consult the appropriate professional.

Physical activity and recovery

Recovery is part of training too

Nutrition, rest and an appropriate training load form the foundation of recovery. Before considering a supplement, it is worth reviewing whether these aspects meet the demands of your activity.

Someone who trains occasionally has different needs from someone who regularly completes intense sessions, competes or has little recovery time between efforts.

Supplements may be useful in specific situations, but their selection should address an identified need and a clear goal. Their composition, tolerability and compatibility with other supplements or medication also matter.

Muscles, bones and joints

Movement needs adequate nutrition too

Muscles, bones and joints work together as a system that needs physical activity, recovery and a sufficient, varied diet.

Before choosing a supplement for the musculoskeletal system, it is worth identifying your goal and understanding what its ingredients actually provide. A product containing vitamins and minerals serves a different purpose from one containing protein or collagen.

Not all products have the same scientific support or address the same needs. Your diet, health and intended goal should inform your choice.

Immune health and seasonal changes

Supporting recovery during more demanding periods

Seasonal changes can coincide with changes in rest, diet, physical activity and contact with other people. In sport, competitions and travel can also increase recovery demands.

Being physically fit does not mean being protected against infections. It is worth paying attention to the balance between training load, nutrition and rest, particularly during more demanding periods.

Before considering a supplement, individual needs should be reviewed. The aim is not to follow the same programme every winter or promise that a product will prevent colds.

Rest and wellbeing

Making time for rest

Your schedule, work, training and worries can influence how you rest. Before looking for a supplement, it is worth considering your habits and what may be making recovery difficult.

If a supplement for sleep or rest is being considered, it is important to define what you expect from it, review the available evidence and take account of any medication and other products already being used.

If sleep difficulties persist or affect your daily life, it is important to consult a healthcare professional to assess their cause.

The science of you

Bonusan food supplements

At my practice, I work with Bonusan food supplements. When considering their use, the starting point is each person’s needs and the information about the specific product.

The choice of a supplement depends on its composition, the amounts it provides and your needs. A product belonging to a particular category does not mean it is suitable for everyone.

If you have questions about a Bonusan product, you can contact me. We will review its information and consider whether you need specialist nutritional or medical advice.
